Sustainability Sentiment Score (SSS)

The SSS is up this week - the highest we have seen in quite a few weeks. Hitting a high for Q3, our Growth Climate market was boosted by investors' positive responses to better-than-expected corporate earnings reports and economic data, pushing the index higher. The Voluntary Carbon market has also had a boost this week, the largest it has seen in Q3 as well.

In emissions news for our Regulated Carbon market, the European Commission has updated the quantity of cancelled EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) allowances for certain Member States under the Effort Sharing Regulation (ESR).

This amendment supports cost-efficient emission reductions by allowing nine Member States to cancel a portion of their EU ETS allowances, receiving equivalent ESR allocations in return. Belgium, Malta, the Netherlands, and Sweden have notified the Commission of their intentions for the 2025-2030 period. This update enables Member States to meet their 2030 greenhouse gas reduction targets more efficiently.

Visualizing Tropical Forest Loss in 2023

Tropical forests, located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, are vital for our planet. They host nearly two-thirds of global biodiversity and play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. ๐ŸŒฟ

In 2021, 145 countries pledged to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030 through the Glasgow Declaration on Forests and Land Use. With only six years to go, progress is mixed. Notably, Brazil reduced its forest loss by 36% from 2022, losing 1.14 million hectares in 2023. ๐ŸŒฑ

Despite this, the world still lost 3.75 million hectares of tropical forest last year, equivalent to almost 10 football fields of forest per minute. This loss produced 2.4 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, nearly half of the U.S. annual fossil fuel emissions. ๐ŸŒŽ
