The SSS is slightly down this week, driven heavily by the Voluntary Carbon markets. Our other three markets have stayed relatively stable over the last few weeks. We are even finally seeing some positive movement from the Regulated Carbon markets, which have been in a slump this year. 

As we have touched on in our previous newsletters, the Voluntary Carbon markets tend to be quite volatile and they frequently alternate between steep drops and climbs.

In early March, they took a steep drop and have continued on a downwards trend since. A potential reason for these dramatic shifts is that these particular markets see quite a bit of informational confusion between the different groups involved — project developers, standards organizations, certifiers, and buyers.

This causes a lack of trust in the credits that companies are buying, which results in drops. Despite these challenges, Voluntary Carbon markets are still a useful tool in fighting climate change.

In recognition of this, many governments and organizations have stepped up to begin implementing more oversight and standardization which will positively impact the use of voluntary carbon credits.
