Tracking the Climate Finance Ecosystem💸
The Climate Co-Investor Tracker unveils co-investment trends among US-based companies mentioning climate mitigation or adaptation. Investors featured are those backing at least two firms, forming links if they co-invested in at least one.
Colored clusters denote groups with higher-than-expected co-investment rates. Given the climate crisis complexity, investors must de-risk not only their investments but also the entire solution ecosystem. Herd investing risks neglecting critical components, necessitating a holistic approach.
Climate investors must identify gaps, redundancies, and opportunities, collaborating to safeguard our future.

Fluctuation appears to be the name of the sustainability-sentiment-score game this quarter, as we are back up to mid-range this week.
The Growth Climate and Mature Climate markets finished May 31th on a dip, but the indices saw gains early this week due to positive reports on consumer spending and job growth, which boosted confidence in small-cap stocks. However, June 5th saw declines triggered by concerns over potential interest rate hikes by the Fed and inflation data indicating persistent economic pressures.
As the summer moves forward, we move into what is considered to be the largest election year, globally, on record. With at least 64 countries (plus the EU) meant to hold major elections in 2024, climate change has come to the forefront of many campaigns.
Joe Biden, for example, has put out a climate policy push as he runs for reelection. On June 4th, the Biden administration introduced new guidelines for 'responsible participation' in the Voluntary Carbon market, aimed at improving market credibility.
These guidelines, endorsed by top climate and economic advisers, call for credits to meet 'credible atmospheric integrity standards' and urge companies to reduce their own carbon footprints.
The guidelines also ensure environmental justice safeguards to ensure that credit-generating activities do not harm local communities. Critics argue that fundamental issues in carbon credit effectiveness, which we have discussed in previous weeks, remain unaddressed. Supporters believe the guidelines could legitimize the VCM, potentially boosting its value to US$1 trillion by 2050!

Unlocking Latin America’s climate tech opportunity💰
Andres Baehr, founder of Savia Ventures, a climate tech VC based in Mexico City, is currently in the process of raising funds and has already supported five startups through its initial fund.
According to Baehr, Latin America represents "the largest untapped climate market opportunity right now," highlighting factors such as lower valuations, abundant natural resources, and the trend of nearshoring in northern Mexico and Central America.
Baehr emphasizes that the region will require solutions aimed at reducing energy consumption, optimizing logistics, and implementing more efficient processes, all of which fall under the umbrella of climate tech.
